The course provides individuals with the knowledge, context, and emotional preparation needed to approach the autism diagnostic process with confidence and clarity.
The course is delivered online, and consists of three, weekly sessions.
In this session, we explore the unique and wonderful characteristics that make up the autistic experience. Together, we’ll learn how autistic individuals often see the world from a different perspective, offering a valuable and insightful way of thinking. You’ll discover how feeling different can be both a strength and a challenge, and how many individuals may experience the need to mask their true selves in order to fit in.
In this session, we’ll look at the DSM criteria for autism diagnosis, and explore what these criteria mean, both from a clinical perspective and through the lens of the autistic experience. We’ll break down how the criteria are used to diagnose autism, while also highlighting how these characteristics may show up differently in daily life. Rather than focusing on limitations, we’ll discuss how the criteria can reflect the diverse and unique ways that autistic individuals engage with the world.
Waiting for an autism assessment can bring a mix of emotions, including anxiety, uncertainty, and the ups and downs of the unknown. In this session, we’ll explore ways to practice self-care while navigating this roller coaster of feelings. We’ll acknowledge the anxiety of waiting for answers and provide practical coping strategies to help manage those emotions in a healthy way.
